Welded Nozzle

A nozzle element welded straight into the line instead of held between flanges: no flange pair and no gasket joints at the measurement point. The profile, ISA-1932 or long radius, is chosen as for a flanged nozzle.

Design

Welded straight into the line, no flanges

Welded flow nozzles need no flanges, gaskets or bolts at the line joint. The nozzle is butt welded into the pipeline as an inline component, so the installed length is the measuring section itself. A flanged spool is available where the line calls for one.

The design also removes the gasket from the joint, so there is no gasketed joint to leak. The measuring section becomes part of the pipe rather than an assembly bolted into it.

Advantages

No flanges or fasteners Welded in as an inline component, so there are no flanges, gaskets, bolts or nuts to buy, torque or replace.
Leakage free No gasket in the joint means no gasket to fail.
Weld ends to the pipe The weld preparation is cut to the actual pipe wall, so the joint matches the line it goes into.
Accessories welded on Tapping pipes, shut-off valves and condensate chambers can be welded on in the workshop.

Material selection

Two rules set the specification. The nozzle is chosen for wear and corrosion resistance; the spool is matched to the line pipe so the weld and the thermal expansion behave as one.

Nozzle & throat316 / 316L, 304 / 304L stainless steelWear resistant and the default for water, steam and clean gas. Where the throat has to expand with the pipe, it is cut from an alloy compatible with the line material instead.
Spool & bodyMatched to the line — A106 Gr B carbon, A335 P11 / P22 alloy, A312 TP316L stainless; P235GH, 16Mo3Specified from the piping class so the site weld is a like-for-like joint and needs no transition piece.
High temperature serviceA182 F11, F22, F91 / F92, 347HCreep resistant grades for main steam, reheat and superheater outlet lines.
Corrosion resistant upgradeDuplex (UNS S31803 / S32205), super duplex (UNS S32750), Alloy C-276 (UNS N10276), Alloy 625 (UNS N06625), Alloy 400 (UNS N04400)Applied to the nozzle alone, or to the complete body where chloride or acidic service governs the selection.

What to send for sizing

A welded nozzle is cut to the pipe it goes into. The weld preparation follows the actual wall thickness, not the nominal, so the pipe data has to come with the enquiry.

The nozzle profile is chosen the same way as a flanged one — ISA-1932 or long radius, against the standard the project is specified to.
